Sergeant 1st Class (SFC) Robert M. Woodward Jr.  woodwardr@christina.k12.de.us

Mission: To motivate young people to become better citizens.

Army Junior ROTC complements the core curricula and overall educational programs of Newark High School, offering students a unique opportunity for personal growth. JROTC is remarkably comprehensive; to a base of American citizenship and history, we add a battery of values and skills which are indispensable to success in school and beyond. JROTC teaches self-discipline, confidence, organization, ethics, integrity, and responsibility.

We train students to think on their feet, to make decisions, to work as team members, to motivate themselves and others, and to lead. JROTC instructors teach as much by example as by syllabus. They serve as role models for their students, and as mentors who provide strong incentives to stay in school and graduate.

Enrollment is open to all 9th-12th grade students, and JROTC may be taken every year of high school for one elective credit each year. JROTC is not a recruitment program for the military, although each year a few JROTC graduates do select some form of military service. All uniforms (worn once weekly), textbooks, and related course materials are provided at no cost to the students. Employers and college Admissions Directors tell us they are always pleased to see JROTC on a transcript or resume. Based on ten years' experience at NHS, we can state, "JROTC will help you to succeed as a team, and thrive as an individual."

Newark High School's JROTC Instructors are specially trained, retired Army officers:
