Newark High School currently offers 3 modern foreign languages; Spanish, French and German. In addition, Latin has returned to the curriculum. This year, students can take from Level 1 to AP in both Spanish and French. German students can progress from Level 1 to Level 4 and Latin students from Level 1-4. In the future, Newark hopes to extend the option of AP to students of both German and Latin.
In addition to classes, students can also participate in a Spanish or French club. For those excelling in Spanish and French, the option is open to join the National Honor Societies. To be a member of the Spanish National Honor Society, students must have maintained a 95 average in all of their Spanish classes as well as hold a 3.3 overall GPA. The student must be enrolled in a Level 3 or higher class and be a sophomore or higher grade level student. Throughout the year, the Spanish National Honor Society participates in many fundraising activities such as quesadilla and homemade chocolate sales as well as provide tutoring for lower level Spanish students. The money raised by the SNHS is donated to Spanish related organizations in need.
Those students wishing to join the French National Honor Society must have a 93 in their French classes and also for their average in all other classes. The FNHS holds monthly crêpe sales during the two lunches. The money raised during these sales is used to support the reforestation project in Haiti.
Finally the opportunity exists for students of Spanish and Latin to participate in National Exams each year. These exams are taken by students all around the country in all levels. Awards are given to those who score accordingly and scholarship opportunities are available. The exams take place every year in March.
