Newark Student Attends Best Buddies
International Leadership Conference

Fifteen high
school and college students from
throughout Delaware represented their
schools and Best Buddies Delaware at the
20th Annual Best Buddies International
Leadership Conference. The
conference was held July 24th-27th at
Indiana University in Bloomington,
Indiana.
Student
leaders within Best Buddies chapters
across the globe spent the weekend
learning about the mission of Best
Buddies and the leadership skills
necessary to run their school chapters.
The fifteen
Delaware students attending the
conference represented the many Delaware
Best Buddies chapters in existence. The
representatives included
Kiana Hovington from Christiana
High School
and
Amy Micklos from Newark High
School.
Students
returned from the conference excited for
the year to come. The student
leaders are responsible for leading
their schools Best Buddies chapters in
which students with intellectual
disabilities are matched in one-to-one
friendships with non-disabled peers.
This was the first time Delaware had a
delegation at the conference and
hopes
to increase its size at the 2010
conference. Best Buddies Delaware
received grant support from the
Christmas Shop Foundation, the
Wilmington Flower Market and the
Boardwalk Buddy Walk to help fund
student attendance at this year’s
conference. Best Buddies Delaware
currently has 14 school chapters and
will be expanding to 21 chapters for
this coming school year.
