Why Volunteer?
The Christina School District requires that all high
school student compete 60 hours of volunteer service as a
requirement for graduation.
In addition, volunteering can help you gain leadership skills,
get involved with your community, build new relationships, and
most importantly, make a difference!
What Counts?
Any time spent out of school working with a
non-profit organization. These organizations take any
profits and donate them to the community at large. One
example of such an organization is the Delaware Food Bank.
All donated items and money goes directly to people in need.
Any events or projects held through those organizations may also
count (i.e. Charity Walks, Food Drives, etc.).
School-sponsored community projects (i.e. School Clean-Ups) also
count for volunteer hours.
What Does Not Count?
Any time spent volunteering for an organization that
exists to generate a profit will not count (i.e. working for
free at a store, restaurant or other business). In
addition, babysitting (for family or friends) or doing hours as
part of a court agreement will not count either.
Where Can I Find
Opportunities?
Opportunities are linked below. You can also
talk with your counselor for more information. One great
resource is the
Volunteer Delaware website.
There, you can search for opportunities by interest, location,
and/or organization.
Also, a Volunteer Fair is
held at Newark High each November. Several representatives
from local non-profit organizations discuss opportunities with
students. It is a great way to network and find the right
organization for you!
How Do I Keep
Track of My Hours?
Use the Community Service Requirement Form to Keep
track of your hours. You can also use letters written by
the organization on official letterhead.
What If I
Complete 90 Hours?
With just 30 more hours, you can earn the Delaware
Volunteer Credit. This will count as an elective credit
toward graduation. You will also receive a certificate
signed by the Governor of Delaware and the Secretary of
Education.

(including forms) from the Delaware Volunteer Credit Program.
What If I Complete 100 Hours or More?
If you complete 100 hours during a 12 MONTH period,
you can earn the Presidential Volunteer Service Award (PVSA).
With this award, you will earn an official Presidential
Volunteer Service Award lapel pin, a personalized certificate of
achievement, and a congratulatory letter from the President of
the United States.
