The
Cambridge Program at Newark High School was implemented
six years ago to meet the needs of academically gifted
students interested in a college preparatory program
that combines rigorous coursework and independent
research.
This year, 44 ninth graders, 31 tenth graders and 26
eleventh graders are enrolled in the program. We
recently had our 2nd class of students graduate in June! The Cambridge Program offers an international,
pre-university curriculum and examination system that
emphasizes the value of broad study for academically
able students. The program is administered through the
University of Cambridge, a world-renowned university in
Cambridge,
England.
Newark High School is the first and only high school in
the state to offer the Cambridge Program.
Acceptance into the program is based on student
performance in middle school, standardized test scores, and
other indicators of academic excellence. Students are
required to complete an application process that
includes an essay, information about their academic
achievements
and extracurricular activities, and a
placement test in English and math.
The Cambridge curriculum aims to encourage the skills of
independent research and investigation, the use of
initiative and creativity, and the application of
knowledge and skills. A range of assessment techniques
is used. Emphasis is placed on the use of externally
marked examination papers by the University of Cambridge
International Examinations (CIE) and on compulsory
practical work
where appropriate.
The International General Certificate of Secondary
Education (IGCSE) is primarily a two-year curriculum that provides
a strong preparation for higher-level courses such as
AP. Students are enrolled in the IGCSE program in 9th
and 10th grade. IGCSE is taken in over 100
countries worldwide. It is recognized as evidence of
ability by academic institutions and employers around
the world.
