Science at Keene

District Science Goal: By 2006, all students and all disaggregated populations will be able to perform at or above the proficiency level in Science, Level III, on the DSTP (4, 6, 8, 11).
The Science Curriculum is standards based and stresses the importance of inquiry through the hands-on experience provided by Smithsonian Science kits.   Each year, students receive instruction in life science, earth science, and physical science.

Smithsonian Science Kits:  Since the beginning of our school three years ago, Keene has received materials, termed “science kits” from the Delaware Science Coalition. Each grade level receives 3 kits per year. In order for a teacher to use the kits he or she must attend several after-school sessions, or summer training.   During this training, teachers are familiarized with the science content, materials, activities and assessments in the kit. The Science Curriculum is standards based and stresses the importance of inquiry through the hands-on experience provided by the kits. Each year, students receive instruction in life science, earth science, and physical science. Students are exposed to the nature of science and the procedures that all scientists follow in their daily work.

Delaware State Science Standards: Keene is driven by the Delaware State Content Standards in all subject areas. To learn more about the Science Standards that guide Keene's curriculum, click here.
