Health & Physical Education Sciences

District students riding stationary bikes while reading in the school libraryThe philosophy of the Health & Physical Education program is to provide students with the information and skills essential to achieving healthy, physically active lifestyles.

In physical education, students have the opportunity to participate in real and meaningful educational experiences.  Meeting and exceeding the Delaware physical education standards promotes lifelong physical activity that will carry over to workplace productivity, increased fitness levels and improve the overall wellness associated with the quality of life.  "Participation in quality physical education programs results in learning real life skills that translate into mental, physical, social and spiritual well being."  State of Delaware Physical Education Curriculum Framework.

Standards based curriculum:
  • Promotes quality health and physical education instruction

  • Provides an educational experience where each student can be successful

  • Provides students with information and skills essential to selecting healthy lifestyles

  • Provides information and skills to assist students in achieving an active lifestyle.

Health education provides a comprehensive skill-based curriculum designed to develop health literate citizens.  Activities and skills are provided to help students obtain, interpret, and understand basic health information and services.  Currently national efforts are urging Americans to improve their health and "practice behaviors that promote lifelong health and well being; to access quality health care services effectively; and to promote the health of others, the community and the environment."  Delaware Curriculum  Framework and Assessment

Comprehensive health education promotes healthy choices to:

  • Perform more effectively

  • Better attendance at work and school due to injury and illness

  • Need less medical treatment for premature onset of disease
