The English as a second language program at Gauger-Cobbs Middle School is a pull-out program designed to facilitate second language acquisition. Experts state that acquiring a second language takes seven to ten years. Pupils come from many different countries (Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Colombia, Vietnam, Turkey, Pakistan, China, Egypt and India) and speak diverse languages. Beginner and intermediate English language learners are scheduled for math, science, social studies, ESL and electives. Advanced ESL students also take core subjects and are scheduled for one ESL class instead of an elective, and these students also take English language arts. Newcomers are tested and scheduled for ESL I, ESL II, or ESL III depending on their English proficiency level. Most English language learners are also scheduled for ESL Reading Support Lab. English as a second language students are tested annually using the ACCESS test to evaluate English proficiency levels, and students must score a 5.0 or higher on the test, achieve grade level status on MAP/DSTP and have high academic achievement in their core subjects in order to exit the program.
