Your child’s teacher will discuss his/her academic progress with you throughout the year.  At the end of the year a decision will be made regarding your child’s promotion to the next grade level.  For your convenience, we have supplied the Guidelines for Promotion below.  Please take a minute to review them and ask your child’s teacher if you have any questions!

 

Guidelines for Promotion

 

There are several factors that will be considered when determining promotion for each student.  These include the following (all factors are based upon the 3rd Marking Period report card):

 

English Language Arts (ELA) Criteria:

· A student must receive a “NP” (Near Proficiency Level) or higher in all of the three ELA areas (phonics and decoding, oral comprehension, and written comprehension)

· A student must receive a “NP” or higher for their Writing Proficiency Level

 

Math Criteria:

· A student must receive a “NP” or higher in all indicators

 

Science and Social Studies Criteria:

· A student must receive a “NP” or higher in these subject areas each marking period

 

Wagner Law Criteria:

· A student must pass 50% of their instructional program (ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies) AND

· A student must pass ELA

 

Attendance Criteria:

· A student must attend 90% of the school year to be promoted

 

 

Other factors may need to be considered when assessing students in special programs such as Bilingual/ESL or special education programs.

 

Criteria for students with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP):

· Promotion for students with an IEP is based on successful completion of the IEP

· To the extent possible, the IEP will be developed with the goal of helping students meet general promotion criteria

· In the event of conflicting judgment, the IEP team will make the final decision on promotion status

 

ESL/Bilingual Criteria:

· Promotion of students in the ESL/Bilingual program will be determined by and educational review team including the current classroom teacher, ESL teacher, and building administrator

· The following factors will be taken into consideration

           1. Academic performance related to grade level standards

           2. English proficiency level

           3. Documented instructional accommodations necessary for the child’s success

           4. Evidence of academic growth from entry to present

           5. Achievement
