From the Counselor's Desk

We've been busy since my last report! Let me share with you what we have done.

Bullying questions continue to be read every Monday morning during announcements and children who respond can earn PBS coupons.

I continue to see each grade level, 1st through 4th, once a month for classroom guidance. In November, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades learned what kind of behavior we need to have to be a bully-free school and 2nd and 3rd grade students participated in a poster contest, "How to Make Downes Bully Free." Winning posters are displayed on the wall across from my office. Fourth graders were given a lesson from the Second Step Program, Empathy Training. In December 1st graders had a lesson on tattling versus telling. Second, third, and fourth graders learned about being a caring being by tracing a body on paper and writing their ideas for being caring inside. The "caring beings" have been hung on the walls by the classrooms as a reminder to students.

During January's career exploration seminar, Mr. Furmato spoke to the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students about his careers. He is a podiatrist, a professor at Temple University, and has degrees in chemical engineering. His focus was on having the students understand that what they do now will help prepare them for the future. He urged the students to read and be inquisitive.

The 5th grade students have had two of the eight lessons of Seasons of Respect. They have learned what the word respect means and how to show respect, including the concept of respectful listening. This program is sponsored by Connecting Generations.

The Gentleman's Club, held every Tuesday during 5th grade lunch, continues to help 5th grade boys with self-respect, self-esteem, proper etiquette, and HRR. The boys work to get ready for middle school and develop conflict resolutions skills. They have also had their first outside speaker, Mr. Reed. He is the owner of "His Image," a barbershop in Wilmington. Mr. Reed spoke to the boys about his youth and how he was able to take the path to success as an entrepreneur.

The two other new initiatives, a Lady's Club and K-Kids Club are still in the planning stages. The K-Kids Club is a volunteer club sponsored by the Kiwanis Club International.

Please continue to save aluminum can tabs and fronts of used cards. I love the way we can volunteer to help others simply by recycling items!

At our kids' disposal we have self-help books and magazine articles that give us plenty of ideas on how to relieve stress and work through problems. Sometimes problems are greater than what any book or magazine article can solve. There are times when we need to speak with a professional. I have listed some agencies who have certified therapists ready to help you work through any problem that may arise in your life. Please take advantage of the many services which are available.
