Christina Students Participate in Election Events

On Friday, October 31 a student delegation from
the Christina School District attended the
Delaware Mock Election Convention in Dover.
The delegation members included:
- Kirk Middle School - Portia Tyson
(teacher), Patrick Hudson (student teacher)
and
Matthias Ojo (student)
- Christiana High School - Mark
Mangual (teacher) and Kellan Turner
(student)
Shue-Medill Middle School social studies
teacher Bart Dryden was the District Coordinator
for the Mock Election program, which involved
students statewide. According to Dryden,
close to 5,000 Christina students (grades 4-12)
voted in the program. Also on October 31,
Christiana High School social studies teacher
Ruth Mayer took 24 Christiana students to the
Joe Biden Homecoming Rally at Memorial Hall on
the Green at the University of Delaware.
At Brader Elementary School, 20 fourth
and fifth grade enrichment students worked for
several weeks studying every aspect of the
election and entered the Delaware Project from
the University of Delaware "Predict the
Electoral Votes Contest." The individual
students assessed several current polls and the
election history of every state for the last
three elections, and predicted how they believed
each state's electoral votes would be cast in
this election. "They can hold a
conversation with anyone about the issues of
this election and the election process in our
country," said enrichment teacher Diane D'Angelo.
