Internal working group presents Board with
plans for implementing Community Consensus
Plan |
An
internal working group formed to
implement the Community Consensus
Plan has presented its strategy to the
Christina Board and
update the Board on a monthly basis. The
group is made up of District staff
from virtually all departments
within the District representing
Facilities, Human Resources,
Transportation, Curriculum and
Instruction, Administrative
Services, Student Services, Special
Services, Communications,
Technology, and Bayard Middle School
administration. The group meets
weekly. Among the many
projects being addressed are the
conversion of Bayard to a middle
school, adding 6th grade to the
District’s existing middle schools,
implementing Full-Day Kindergarten
in 8 locations in 2008, addressing
program locations and building
capacity, and planning for moving
staffing, and technology issues.

Board
approves Bayard School Design plans
The Christina Board of Education approved the
conversion and renovation plans for Bayard Middle School on
January 8, an important step toward making Bayard a middle
school serving grades 6-8. The renovations are
scheduled to be completed in August 2008. Construction
bids are expected to go out in February, but the majority of
the work will take place over the summer months. To

State Board Approves Christina's Neighborhood Schools Plan |
On
January 17, 2008, the Delaware State Board of Education
approved the Christina School District’s Neighborhood
Schools Plan submission. The plan, called The Community
Consensus Plan (“CCP”), was developed by the Christina
School District community and approved by the Christina
Board of Education.
The main
components of the CCP include:
- Create grade configurations K-5, 6-8, 9-12
district-wide to minimize the transitions between
schools for all students,
- Conversion of Bayard to operate as a grade 6-8
Wilmington middle school,
- Completion of Porter Road Elementary School on Route
40,
- Creates space for Full Day Kindergarten
district-wide,
- Utilize district facilities and resources as
efficiently as possible, and
- Assign students to schools as close to their home
for as many years as possible.
Implementation of the "Community Consensus" Plan (CCP) will
be completed over two school years:
School Year 2008-2009
In the Wilmington portions of Christina, renovations
required at Bayard will start in spring 2008. Wilmington
students will attend Bayard beginning in the 2008-2009
school year. Students in grades K–5 residing in Wilmington
will attend Pulaski, Stubbs, Elbert-Palmer and Bancroft.
Full Day Kindergarten will be offered in all four of these
schools.
In the suburban portion of Christina, suburban middle school
students (grades 6-8) will attend Kirk, Shue-Medill, and
Gauger-Cobbs. Elementary school students will attend school
grades K–5 in their 2007 K–4 feeder patterns for an interim
period of one year.
School Year 2009-2010
Christina is hopeful that the construction bond funding will
be available to allow the district to complete the Porter
Road Elementary School project for the opening of school in
August 2009.
Completion of the Porter Road Elementary School will allow
Christina to complete the transition for student assignment
according to the CCP. Space would then be available at all
schools for Full Day Kindergarten.
