Guidance Services at Pulaski!

Our Guidance Councilor is Ms. Adetola Magbagbeola.  She sees  students individually and in small groups.  She also teaches skills to classes.  Parents or guardians should feel free to call with any issues or concerns that they feel may interfere with the student's academic performance.

***********************************************************************

She will do classroom guidance activities, teacher-parent conferences, and family consultation.  In the classroom, she focuses on teaching key life and relationship skills such as academic achievement, building self-esteem, conflict resolution, anger management, making friends, communication, goal setting and problem solving, how to handle peer pressure, and assertiveness training.

One of the basic lessons consists of teaching the PBS terminology and expectations.  We strive to achieve a school-wide language and behavior management plan that each student and teacher can recognize and use.  PBS rewards the students for making good choices with an assembly every month.  To find out what rewards are being planned for each month, please check the school calendar.

Sometimes students need individual or group counseling for problems related to academics, classroom behavior, peer relationships, or life stressors.  Many students will ask to come to counseling on their own, while others are referred by a teacher, the principal, or a parent.

There four groups that are going to be meeting this year.

  1. Anger management group

  2. Family group (For kids of divorce and separation; death in the family; fighting between family members; difficulties because of a blended family; drug and alcohol problems, etc.)
  3. Friendship group (For kids with poor friendship and social skills)
  4. Low self-esteem group (Also for kids with depression, anxiety, stress, etc.)

***********************************************************************

Please keep in mind that conversations are private and confidential except in three special cases.

1.  When a student is being abused in some manner.
          2.  When a student is a danger to themselves.
          3.  When a student is a danger to someone else.

In these cases, the guidance counselor is REQUIRED by state law to inform the principal, the parents/legal guardians, or anyone else who can help to ensure the child's safety.

***********************************************************************

Our councilors look forward to working with the children this year to help them reach their full potentials as students and productive human beings!
