English Language Learners
English as a Second Language (ESL) and
Bilingual Programs
The English as a Second Language (ESL)
Program provides English language acquisition to
second language learners using only English.
ESL is available grades K-12.
The Bilingual Program
(English Language Learners/ELL) provides
instructional support to Spanish speaking students
in their native language while developing their
English proficiency skills. The Bilingual
Program is available in grades K-5.
(Note:
Students new to the district in 6th to 12th grade
who speak Spanish will enter the ESL program.)
English Language Learners (ELL)
The Bilingual and ESL programs in the Christina
School District provide students with optimal
academic and social English language skills in order
for them to transition and thrive in the mainstream
classroom environment.
Bilingual and ESL Programs
follow state standards for language proficiency.
At the elementary level, both programs are housed at
"site schools." Only ESL programs are
available at the secondary level.
Preparing
for Registering ELL Students
Parents should register at their designated
school and complete a registration form and Home Language Survey form.
The Permission to Evaluate form lets us test your
child to evaluate his/her English proficiency.
The Home Language Survey determines the language
spoken at home. Students must meet all
requirements for registration in order to be
enrolled in the ELL program.
Waiving
Services for the ELL Program
The ELL Program is voluntary. Parents may
refuse ELL services at any time. If you would
like to waive services for the program, please
contact the ELL office in Student Services.
Questions regarding the ESL, ELL and Bilingual
programs should be addressed to Student Services at
302-552-2647.
