Students Earn High Marks at BPA State Leadership Conference

Students from all three Christina high schools attended the 2010 State Leadership Conference for their school chapters of Business Professionals of America (BPA). The state conference was held at the Sheraton Conference Center
in Dover on March 8 and 9.

Christina School District students earned a total of five First Place awards, five Second Place Awards, two Third Place Awards, two Fourth Place Awards and two Fifth Place Awards to qualify to send chapter members to the 2010 National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California in May.

Christiana BPA Chapter members Junyi Cao, Adam Ramsaran, and Ashanti West received first and second place awards and qualified to travel to the National Leadership Conference.  Cao is the first Foreign Exchange student in the club to participate, and she placed 2nd in Economic Research.  Ramsaran has been involved in the club for four years and placed 1st in Graphics Design and 2nd in Presentation Management.  West has been in the club for the past three years and placed 1st in Presentation Management.  “The national conference will be the culmination of a school year’s worth of business skills education and training which members of the Christiana BPA chapter have received,” said chapter advisor, Mrs. DeLissa McNair.

At Newark High School, all six members of Business Professionals of America that represented Newark High School at the 2010 State Leadership Conference placed in at least one event and are eligible to participate in the National Leadership Conference. Their winners included Michael Bashkow, who placed 1st in Administrative Support Research and 3rd in Human Resource Management, Austin Biaselli, who placed 1st in both Information Technology Concepts and Medical Office Procedure and 4th in Insurance Concepts, Justin Reamer, who placed 1st in Banking and Finance and 2nd in Insurance Concepts, Rahul Patel, who placed 4th in Medical Office Procedure, Senator Black, who placed 5th in Insurance Concepts, and Tyler Prusisz, who placed 5th in Banking and Finance.

Glasgow’s BPA Chapter will send Julie Amilcare to the National Leadership Conference after she earned 2nd Place, Basic Office Systems and Procedures. In her competitive event, Amilcare had to create business documents on the spot within a specified time limit using the new Microsoft Office 2007 products.   “The test was a challenge this year for all the schools.  The Microsoft Office products were updated this year in our building.  In addition, the Glasgow High School BPA Chapter was recognized at the Conference for their Annual Christmas Party with children from the Terry Center.  The Chapter received the Community Service Award.

Please congratulate these 19 outstanding students who represented Christiana, Glasgow, and Newark High School, many of whom will now represent the state of Delaware at the National Conference.  BPA advisors are Darren Tyson, Newark High School; Sandi Fritzler and Edwin Smith, Glasgow High School; Karen Powers, Carol Schreiber, and DeLessa McNair, Christiana High School.
