School Choice Open Enrollment Begins November 1
Parents May Apply Online at the District Website

The State School Choice Open Enrollment period begins on Sunday, November 1, 2009. The deadline for applications is Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. Applications must be returned to the Christina School District office by January 13, 2010.

Christina residents interested in enrolling their child in a school other than the one where they are assigned for the 2010-2011 school year, must submit a Choice Application by the January 13 deadline. Parents who submitted a Choice Application for a child enrolled in Kindergarten this year, must submit a Choice Application for first grade.

Parents who are interested in applying for one of the limited Full-Day Kindergarten seats at Downes Elementary School, Maclary Elementary School, Porter Road Elementary School, Wilson Elementary School, or West Park Place Elementary School for the 2010-2011 school year, must first register their child at the child’s assigned school, and then must submit a Choice Application. Children must be age 5 by August 31 to attend Kindergarten.

Parents may access information and forms and apply online at the District’s website at www.christina.k12.de.us/Choice/2010-2011 beginning November 1.  Choice Applications will also be available beginning November 2 in every school and at the Christina School District office.  For more information, please contact the Education Options Office at 552-2610.

H1N1 School Vaccination Program Update
and H1N1 Resources

The Christina School District has agreed to participate in Delaware's School Vaccination Program.  This program will begin in the Christina School District on Monday, November 2 at Smith Elementary School, Brennen School, and Delaware School for the Deaf.  Additional clinic dates will be announced by the Delaware Division of Public Health, and reminder notices will be sent to parents who have returned a completed consent form for their child to receive the vaccine.

H1N1 and Seasonal Flu Information
As we enter the annual flu season, the Christina School District continues to closely monitor the situation related to a possible H1N1 outbreak.  Helping to ensure the safety and well-being of all
students and employees in the event of a major flu outbreak is a primary concern for the District.

While no one can predict how severe this year's flu season will be, or how it will be impacted by the H1N1 virus, the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other health organizations recommend we all take some commonsense steps
to help protect ourselves and others from the flu.

If You or Your Child is Sick, Stay Home

If you or your child is sick with flu-like illness, the CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after
your fever is gone, except to get medical care or for other necessities.  (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)  Keep away from others as much as possible to avoid making other sick.

When to Seek Medical Care

  • Most people recover from the flu without needing
medical care.  Bed rest and lots of fluids are recommended; acetaminophen (Tylenol) will help with fever, muscle aches, and headache.
  • If you have a severe illness, or have a health condition that increases your risk of a serious illness, contact your health care provider immediately.
  • Symptoms of a serious illness in an adult may include:
    • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
    • Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
    • Sudden dizziness
    • Confusion
    • Severe or persistent vomiting
    • Flu-like symptoms that improve but then return
      with fever or worse cough
  • Health conditions that increase the risk of serious illness include:
    • Age 65 or older and younger than 5 years old
    • Pregnancy
    • Diabetes
    • Asthma
    • Immune-suppression (for example, on prednisone)
    • Chronic lung disease

Don't Spread the Virus

Wash hands frequently with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand cleaners, especially after coughing or sneezing
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and put the used tissue in the trash.  If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, not into your hands.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.  Germs spread this way.
Avoid contact with sick individuals.
Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
Get vaccinated
Make sure your home is stocked with a thermometer, first-aid kid, supply of tissues, etc.
