Gauger-Cobbs
REACH Student Is a Hero After Helping Fellow Student
On
September 24 Gauger-Cobbs student Montik Jonhson
saw another student at his table begin to
choke while eating lunch. The student was at a
nearby table and facing away from staff members when Montik noticed the child was in trouble and raised
his hand to get the attention of staff member George
Barry. Mr. Barry immediately responded and
performed the Heimlich maneuver, successfully
expelling the food from the student's airway.
Fortunately, the student was not injured.
Montik Johnson, who is a sixth grade REACH student
at Gauger-Cobbs Middle School, received a
certificate and a medal commending him for
recognizing that a student was in trouble and then
quickly alerting staff of a student in need.

Ronald McDonald Rides the "Tour de Fitness" between
Stubbs, Bancroft and Elbert-Palmer
|
|
 |
|
McDonald's Restaurants of the Greater
Philadelphia Region held a fun event in
Wilmington on September 25, featuring Ronald
McDonald. The event raised awareness of
bike safety and the importance of leading a
balanced, active lifestyle among elementary
school students. The tour included Ronald
McDonald beginning at Stubbs Elementary School.
He then continued biking to Bancroft Elementary
School and finished at Elbert-Palmer Elementary
School. At each school, Ronald provided an
engaging presentation to students focusing on
bike safety and the importance of being healthy.
Ronald also presented the physical education
department at each school with a $1,000
donation.
The
Wilmington Police and Fire Department were
partners in the event and police officers on
bicycles provided an escort for Ronald McDonald
between each school, as well as a fire truck and
several police cars. Delaware-based Bike
Line Corporation co-sponsored the series and
followed the bikers with their technical van to
help with any necessary repairs. The
Christina School District extends its thanks to
McDonald's Restaurants of the Greater
Philadelphia Region and Bike Line Corporation
for providing students with a fun way to learn
about fitness, as well as a generous donation to
each of the participating schools. |

Marshall Elementary and
Bayard Middle Schools to
Host
"What In The World?" Career Awareness Program |
| |
Bayard
Middle and Marshall Elementary Schools will
host the Business, Industry, Education (BIE)
Alliance’s “What In The World?” career
awareness program. Marshall 5th
graders will participate in the program
on Wednesday, October 7 and Bayard 7th grade
students will participate on Tuesday,
October 13 and Wednesday, October 14. “What
in the World?” is an interactive program
designed to introduce students in grades 3
through 12 to a wide variety of careers in
the math, science and technology fields.
For more than a decade, “What in the World?”
program volunteers from the local business
community have gone into area schools,
bringing with them job-related “mystery
objects” designed to spark the students’
curiosity and inspire them to learn more
about the skills and education necessary for
success in these jobs. Participation in
“What in the World?” broadens students’
horizons by exposing them to unfamiliar
occupations and motivates them to explore
career options in a whole new way.
Representatives from the following business
partners are among those who will be sharing
their time and expertise with the students:

Delaware. The REACH Program within the
Christina School District invites you to come
and support the REACH Parent Group as they
sponsor two fundraisers for the students and
teachers within the program. The fundraisers
will take place on Wednesday, October 7 and
Tuesday, October 27 at the Friendly’s Restaurant
located at 1115 S. College Avenue, Newark from
5:00–9:00 p.m. The REACH group receives 10% of

and providing meaningful learning activities
that enhance the school experience for all
students. The REACH Program provides an
excellent vocational and academic program for
