Glasgow High School Hosts Successful Benefit Concert

On Friday, March 13, Glasgow High School hosted a four-hour concert to benefit Special Needs students in Glasgow’s REACH program.  The REACH program serves students with severe cognitive and physical disabilities.  Five groups composed of Glasgow students and alumni, University of Delaware and Christiana High School students performed at the inaugural Glasgow REACH Benefit Concert.  The bands performing were: Hadarah, Shane Palkovitz, Band InstrumentsTeknikolour, Unicorn Valley, and My Name is Drew.  Between ticket sales and concessions the students raised $838.00 for special enrichment events for Glasgow’s REACH population.  Staff members Alexis Waters, Pete Richardson, and Matt Pleasanton volunteered their time.

The concert was the idea of Glasgow Junior Derrick Jones.  In January, Jones approached Glasgow Principal, Ray Gravuer, with a request for a student led band concert.  He explained that the evening concert would host five bands and asked what needed to be done to hold the show in Glasgow’s auditorium.  After some discussion the two agreed to hold the concert if a staff member agreed to sponsor the group and any profit would be donated to a charity of the students’ choice.  Derek secured Ms. Alexis Waters as the event sponsor and sought approval for the mid-March date.  “The best part of this evening is that it was totally planned by students,” said Ray Gravuer.  “As principal, you always get nervous when outside groups are involved in a school-sponsored event.  The part that made it a safe bet was the character and determination demonstrated by Derek during the months leading up to the concert night.  I believe that all who participated in the evening, from performers to volunteers learned something about community service and life!”

Downes Elementary Fourth Graders Host Former Tuskegee Airman

Michael Lukaszewicz’s fourth grade class at Downes Elementary School was one of five grant recipients in the state to be awarded funds to study the struggles and successes of the Tuskegee Airmen, the nation’s first black military airmen trained at Tuskegee Army Air Field in Tuskegee, Alabama.  Students in the class created a presentation outlining theDownes Elementary Fourth Graders Host Former Tuskegee Airman history of the Tuskegee Airmen and their contributions to World War II, American history, and African-American civil rights.  Students received support in developing the project from Jerry Solomon, a school volunteer and grandparent of project participant Quinn Huddleston.

The class was thrilled to learn that one of the original Tuskegee Airmen, Fred Johnson, was able to attend the presentation and meet students and staff.  He was accompanied by Retired Brigadier General Ernest Talbert from the Delaware National Guard.

“This provides a remembrance, drawing appropriate lessons from the Tuskegee Airmen’s wonderful story of facing adversity and proving that they could succeed,” said General Talbert about the grants that support students’ research and understanding of the Tuskegee Airmen’s experience.

“I think this helps to keep the feeling alive,” said Lukaszewicz.  “It reminds kids how it was in the past, when the armed services were not integrated.  The students worked very hard under Mr. Solomon’s direction so they would represent Downes Elementary well.”  Lukaszewicz also remarked that the experience of the Tuskegee Airmen was one of the stepping stones for electing the first African-American president, Barack Obama.

The students will make their presentation to the whole school in early May.

Gauger-Cobbs Middle School Goes Green

Gauger-Cobbs Middle School is doing its part to “go green” and help sustain the environment.  Eighth grade science teacher, Thomas Snook, started a recycling program that is led and maintained by 8 students.  The lead student representative of the club, Sheila Martinez, organizes projects to educate teachers and students on the importance of “being green.”  The students in the program placed bins throughout the school to make recycling an easily, accessible process for the students, teachers, and staff of the school.  Every other day, students collect the recycled items throughout the school and place them into the recycling "Go Green"container purchased by the Gauger-Cobbs Student Council.  The goal each week is to recover 8 cubic yards of recyclables, which is picked up weekly by DSWA.

The club is currently selling Earth Day t-shirts urging Gauger-Cobbs students to “Be Green” this Earth Day.  These shirts are being sold to raise money in an effort to continue their “green” projects around the school.  The creation of the recycling club has educated and allowed the students to be an integral part of Gauger-Cobbs’ pursuit of “being green.”

High School Students Attend JA Focus on the Future Capstone Event

District students participate in JA "Focue on the Future"

On March 13, students from Glasgow, Newark, and Christiana High Schools participated in the Junior Achievement’s Focus on the Future Program held at JA World in Wilmington, Delaware. Support from the Rodel Foundation allowed Junior Achievement to present classes and real world experiences that would help students discover their post-high school options.

“Junior Achievement of Delaware is proud to have presented the work-readiness program, ‘Focus on the Future,’ in the Christina School District during the past school year,” said Rebecca M. Fisher, Vice President of Education for Junior Achievement of Delaware.

District students participate in JA "Focue on the Future"“We had 31 students from our Accounting, Business Finance, and Computer Application classes engaged with the business representative in the careers that they choose through various surveys and classroom assignments,” said Ed Smith, Business Teacher at Glasgow High School.  “Our students completed a year long program on work-readiness skills, career exploration, and post-secondary education opportunities.”

In the final class sessions, there was a panel discussion about college life that was provided by University of Delaware students.  “Our students were grateful to hear from the University of Delaware students on what college life was like for them and the choices that had to make prior to going to college,” said Mr. Smith.

"We want students to know that they have a world of opportunities for higher education and careers here in Delaware,” said Ms. Fisher.  "Our job is to prepare students to succeed in the global economy.  The first step is helping them find their path toward graduating from high school and then exploring how higher education will help them reach their career and life goals.  JA can do that because of its successful partnerships with the business and education communities."

“Thank you for the opportunity to meet these employers,” said Shamara Brummell, a Glasgow High School senior.  “The information presented by all the businesses has caused me to totally rethink about my college courses to take and my career goals.  The forensic pathologist from the Medical Examiner’s Office helped me out a lot with ways to get into the field and how to plan for college.”

The day started with panel discussion from the various employers and continued with small group discussions in the chosen career pathways of the students.  After lunch, the students worked on budget planning including finding out how much college is going to cost.  Elizabeth Moodie, a Glasgow Business Teacher, commented, “This is awesome!   The questions the students are asking and the real-life answers these business leaders are giving is changing our student’s career and life perspectives.  All of the students are really engaged.”

“The biggest surprise for me was just learning about what a real lawyer thinks and finding out how they got where they are today,” said Michael Whittington, a sophomore from Glasgow High School.

The following companies and organizations participated:

  • Aloysius, Butler & Clark

  • Attorney at Law - Sharon Eppes
