Christina Board Seeks Input in Superintendent Search

What qualities do you value in a Superintendent?  Complete our questionnaire
In addition to the Community and Employee forums, an online questionnaire has been developed and published on the district website that asks individuals to rate the qualities in a superintendent that they value most highly.  Respondents may also share written comments, and the forms may be submitted electronically.  Information gathered from the questionnaires will be provided to the Christina Board to use in the candidate selection process.

Please access the following link: http://csdwebapps.christina.k12.de.us/UltimateSurvey/takeSurvey.asp?surveyID=37 to complete and submit the Superintendent Search Questionnaire.  To obtain a paper copy
of the questionnaire, please contact the Public Information Office by calling 552-2670.

Community and Employee Forums Planned for March 4 and 5
The Christina Board of Education seeks input from parents, students, and members of the public on the characteristics and qualities they are looking for in a new superintendent.  The Board will host Community Forums on March 4 and 5 to outline the process for the superintendent search, identify the characteristics the community would like to see in a new superintendent, and to discuss issues the Christina School District should address in future years.

The schedule for the Community Forums is as follows:

Christina School District employees are also invited to attend Employee Forums scheduled on March 4 and 5.  The Employee Forums will follow the same format as the Community Forums, but will provide additional opportunities for Christina employees to meet with the superintendent search consultant.  The schedule is as follows:

Interim Superintendent Visits Gallaher Elementary

Interim Superintendent Dr. Freeman Williams visited students in Ms. Laura Brace's first grade class in February.  The students have been working on writing persuasive writing pieces and wanted to see if they could persuade Dr. Williams to come in to tell them about his job and to read them a story.  The students had a great time talking about everything that Dr. Williams does and his current position, and their conversation lasted too long to leave time for a story.  Dr. Williams promised to come back to visit again so he can read to students.  The students were very excited about the visit and couldn’t believe how tall the Interim Superintendent is!

Brookside Elementary Receives Field Trip Grant

The second graders of Brookside Elementary will be going on a free field trip this spring!  This is thanks to an $800 grant from the Target Corporation.  Each year Target donates 5% of its earnings to schools around the United States.  This money is used for school class trips.  Mrs. Roche, a second grade teacher at Brookside, filled out the application for the grant in October of this year.  In January she received a letter notifying her that Brookside had been chosen to receive a field trip grant from Target.  This grant will cover both trip cost and transportation.  In addition to their generous monetary gift, Target also sent a box of supplies for the trip.  This box contained a tote bag, clip board, and several other small supplies.  The biggest surprise was a small digital camera and $20 gift card from Target.  The second graders at Brookside are very excited about their trip and these special goodies made them even more excited.  We, at Brookside, want to say a big thank you to Target!

Christina Child Nutrition Services
Planting Seeds for Healthier Schools

Child Nutrition Services, with the help of our garden partner, Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids, Inc., will be planting the seeds for healthier schools as part of our Education Cultivation Garden Project.   School gardens will be built at Marshall, Brader and Stubbs Elementary in time for a spring harvest.  The students will participate in the process from garden planting to healthy eating.

Optimal fruit and vegetable intake is associated with good health and reduced disease risk.  Despite evidence in support of health benefits, national data indicates fewer than half of boys and girls ages 4-18 consume more than 5 servings a day as recommended.  With multiple exposures to fruits and vegetables through hands-on experiences among their peers, students may increase their fruit and vegetable intake.

Christina School District’s Education Cultivation Project is designed to enhance the science curriculum, encourage healthy eating habits and harvest the products to be eaten in the cafeteria.

Kudos to Keene Elementary School which is entering its 2nd growth year in this program!

Maclary Elementary will be the next site for this exciting program.
