Marshall Elementary's Poet in Residence Program
Featured in News Journal

Fifth graders at Marshall Elementary participated in a unique program recently, which was highlighted in an article in the Wilmington News Journal on December 27.  JoAnn Balingit of Newark, who was appointed the state’s poet laureate in May, was the featured artist in an Artist Residency Program, which has been offered since 1985 by the Delaware Division of the Arts.  Balingit made 10 visits to the school, helping students explore poetry and self-expression.  Sheila Dean Ross, program manager for arts and education with the Delaware Division of the Arts, said the residency program is designed as a supplement for the classroom.

“Sometimes, artists will add a different perspective to what’s already being taught at the school,” she said.  “We provide about 75 percent of the funding for the artist, and the school makes up the balance.”  Balingit is the state’s 16th poet laureate.  Click here to read this article.

Glasgow Senior Places 2nd in
VFW's Voice of Democracy Essay Contest

Glasgow High School Senior Katie Gustafson recently placed 2nd in New Castle County for the VFW's Voice of Democracy essay contest.  As a result, Gustafson received a $150 scholarship toward college.  Created in 1947, the Voice of Democracy (VOD) scholarship program is an audio-essay contest for high school students in grades 9-12 that annually provides more than $3 million in scholarships.  The VOD program, endorsed by the National Association of Secondary School Principals', is designed to foster patriotism by allowing students the opportunity to voice their opinion in a three to five minute essay based on an annual theme.

West Park Students Experience Hong Kong Education

West Park Elementary teamed up with the University of Delaware to give Hong Kong Education students a real life experience with education in the United States.  Hong Kong students were invited to observe, learn, and experience West Park classrooms every Wednesday for 5 weeks.  They had many wonderful interactions with students and teachers.  Reciprocal learning took place and we sincerely missed them when they had to leave to move on to their next internship. The third grade team worked on celebrating cultures in reading class.  Mrs. Laws invited her intern Chris Chan to give a first hand lesson on life in China to her third grade class.  Mrs. Laws worked with Chan to help her create a lesson that would help students understand the culture of China from a native perspective.  Chan did a great job executing the lesson using technology and facts about her home.

Brader First Graders Get Moving

First grade students at Brader Elementary School in Newark get a little movement in during a mid-morning break.  Teachers at Brader are encouraged by physical education teacher Mary Beth French to get children up and moving in the classroom, even if it's just for a few minutes at a time, throughout the school day.  With the emphasis on academic performance, teachers have many demands on their classroom time.  But studies suggests that brief interludes of physical activity may give students energy and improve focus.
Brader is one of 19 schools participating in a pilot project to ensure that students get 150 minutes of physical activity per week (30 minutes per day) while at school.  Nemours Health and Prevention Services and the Delaware Department of Education are studying the impact of 150 minutes of physical activity per week on the fitness tests given in Delaware public schools, known as the FITNESSGRAM®.  Results will be released later this Spring.

Fruits and Veggies Take the Spotlight...

Students at Bancroft, Brookside, Elbert Palmer and Stubbs schools have been enjoying fresh produce in accordance with the new USDA Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program since October 2008.

Did you know that eating 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day can promote a healthier lifestyle?
That is why schools are is participating in a new program called Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program (FFVP) supported by the United States Department of Agriculture.  The FFVP allows Child Nutrition to serve all our students a free mid morning or mid day snack of fruits and vegetables.

Fruits and vegetables are good low calorie, low-fat sources of vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
The FFVP shows children that fresh fruits and vegetables are healthy and tasty alternatives to snacks high in fat, sugar, or salt.

Tips for including 5 a day in your diet at home
… Serve at least one fruit or vegetable at every meal and snack.  Try all the different
        colors.

… Dip veggies in low fat dressing.  Tuck them in whole grain pitas or
sandwiches.  Toss some on your pizza.
…Try and try again.  It may take children several tastings (10 or
more) before they begin to enjoy certain foods.

Please be our health partner at school and home.  Let’s make our children the healthiest they can be!

National School Boards Association Recognizes
Christina School District and
Nemours Health and Prevention Services

The National School Boards Association (NSBA) and the American Hospital Association (AHA) are pleased to inform the Christina School District that the partnership between Christina School District and Nemours Health and Prevention Services has been selected for inclusion in a joint NSBA/AHA “lessons learned” publication focusing on school district-hospital partnerships that address childhood obesity (tentative publication date: Spring 2009).  While NSBA will only be able to publish full features for three sites, they hope to also recognize “snapshots” of three additional sites—including your partnership.

NSBA made their selection based on the information Christina School District provided to them during a preliminary phone conversations held on August 10, 2008, with Child and Nutritional Services staff.  They were very impressed with the activities related to our partnership with Nemours, as well as our evidence-oriented approach and the commitment of both the school and hospital staff and boards to its success.

The selection process was challenging because they explored many excellent candidate sites and had to take into consideration factors such as population size, geographic location and demographic profile.  For these reasons and given the high quality of candidates, they decided to also showcase brief “snapshots” that recognize additional partnerships.

Kudos to the Christina School District CNS and school staff whose work with Nemours has made this recognition possible.  We will keep you updated.

Shue Strings Hosts Philadelphia Orchestra Visiting Artists

The Shue Strings hosted visiting artists from the Philadelphia Orchestra at Shue-Medill Middle School on December 1, 2008 and January 12, 2009.  The Visiting Artists Activity is now in its fourth year.  The six-year program was designed to promote and nurture chamber music performance for middle school string players.

Barbara Govatos, Hirona Oka, Burchard Tang, and Yumi Kendall performed for the student musicians in an information concert setting.  Students were encouraged to ask questions and view the musical notation as the musicians performed.

The outreach sessions are fully sponsored by the Delaware Chamber Music Festival Quartet and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Brookside Students Learn Formula for Success from
Philadelphia Flyers and Phantoms

The 4th and 5th grades at Brookside Elementary School held an assembly with the Philadelphia Flyers and Phantoms on January 6.  The students participated in activities about teamwork and academics.  The focus was the Flyers/Phantoms formula for success:

Teamwork  Education  Attitude  Motivation

Former Flyers team member Bob “The Hound” Kelly participated in the event, along with Phlex, the Phantoms mascot.   Bob Kelly was a member of both Stanley Cup winning teams in 1973-74 and 1974-75, and was also a member of the Flyers team that put together a 35-game winning streak in 1980.  He still ranks among the top 10 of several Flyers all-time records, for a left wing.

Kelly is now the Ambassador of Flyers Hockey, and spends his time reaching out to the community by visiting schools, hospitals, golf outings and attending charitable events. He also works with the Flyers' youth hockey department by making appearances and conducting hockey clinics.  He brought two replica Stanley Cups for Brookside students to see, and focused on the “TEAM” approach to school.
