The Christina Community Gives Back with
Donations of
Time, Food and Financial Contributions |
|
|
|
Students and staff
in the Christina School District made many contributions to help
those in need this holiday season. Child Nutrition employees
conducted a holiday food drive in lieu of gift giving amongst
staff, and collectively donated over 550 nonperishable food
items for the Delaware Food Bank.
The District held
its annual United Way Drive in November, and despite tough
economic times for everyone, increased donations overall from
last year. The District collected
$61,974.50
for
2008-2009, which was $3,764.09 over what was collected in
2007-2008. This year, students participated in the United Way
fundraising effort at several school locations, raising more
than $1,300 total. Keene Elementary students raised
$173.92, West Park Place Elementary students raised $46.72,
Marshall Elementary students raised $154.36, and Kirk Middle
School students raised $939.52. Congratulations to all
students and staff in our District for this outstanding effort
to benefit organizations in our community through the United
Way.
At Downes
Elementary, the Mitten Tree is an annual giving activity.
A needy family is "adopted" by the school and items for the
family are written on paper mittens and hung on a tree in the
school lobby. Downes families may choose a paper mitten
with an item written on it, purchase that item, and donate it
directly to the family. Downes Elementary School principal
Denise Schwartz stated that, "This has been an extraordinary
year for the Downes’ mitten tree. We have collected over
$3500.00! This is due in part to the letter that Newark City
Councilman Paul Pomeroy sent out to his friends in his council
district, Newark Rotary Club, and many of our staff and families
from Downes. It is unbelievable how generous so many people
have been to our families in need. We are so fortunate to have
such wonderful friends. Thanks to all who contributed to this
year’s needy family fund."
Students at Sarah Pyle Academy
collected donations from students who chose to "dress down" for
the day that were used to purchase 14 boxes of food for needy
families before the holiday break. Each box contained a
turkey and all the trimmings for a holiday meal.
Students, staff and administrators accepted the challenge at
Kirk this month to become cheerful givers for those that are in
need. Their project, called Mega Care and Cheerful Givers,
resulted in donations of gift cards, cash, and food donations.
Over $1,500 in gift cards were donated, and every one of the 29
homeless students at Kirk received a gift card. Several
other families also received $100 gift certificates.
Students and teachers brought in 3 containers of nonperishable
goods to donate to the Salvation Army. In addition, Kirk
AVID students volunteered their time at the Ronald McDonald
House (RHM) on Monday, December 15th. They cooked a
wonderful holiday dinner for the families of critically ill
children that are admitted to the A.I. Dupont Hospital.
Also, many AVID students donated food items and made festive
homemade decorations for the RMH dining area.
Ms. Brisco, Mr. Moody, and the student government also took a
bus filled with Kirk students to Bayard Middle School to provide
those students with a dinner.
"During this special time of year our Kirk students definitely
have the spirit of helping others. We truly are fortunate
to have such caring and giving members of our student body,"
said Kirk Assistant Principal Mrs. Udo Lovick. "It was really nice to see
our youth caring for their peers during this holiday season. I
was fortunate enough to witness the students at Bayard as they
entered the cafeteria to see dinner plates placed neatly on
tables; dinner plates made especially for them. It really
warmed my heart."
Christina schools have participated in numerous activities to
aid those less fortunate in the past months, including donating
Halloween candy, holding food drives, delivering meals,
volunteering at the Emmanuel Dining Room, and visiting senior
citizens. The spirit of giving and community outreach
continues to thrive amongst students, employees, and families in
our district.
