Douglass Students Win Medals
in Essay Contest
Students at Douglass School were recently
awarded medals for their winning entries in the
City of Wilmington’s Fire Marshall Essay
Contest. Fourth grader Destiny Williams,
who has returned to Bancroft School, won a First
Place medal, fifth-grader Nanya Dantley
won a Second Place medal, and fifth-grader
Anthony Newman won a Third Place medal. The
awards were presented to the students by the
Wilmington Fire Marshall. |

Keene Fifth-Grader is National Skating Champion |
|
|
Emmanuel Savary,
a fifth-grader at
Keene Elementary
School, (University
of Delaware FSC) won
the intermediate
men’s competition of
the 2009 U.S. Junior
Figure Skating
Championship in Lake
Placid, New York on
December 13.
Savary was second
after the short
program with a
32.53, more than
three points behind
Nathan Chen (Salt
Lake Figure
Skating), but
brought an arsenal
of triple jumps in
his free skate to
help glide into
first. Skating dead
last to the
Aladdin
theme song, Savary
landed four double
jumps, including two
double Axels and
three triples -- a
triple toe, triple
Salchow-double
toe-double loop and
another triple
Salchow. His spins
were decent, earning
a Level 2 and 3, and
he took the
second-highest
program component
mark behind the
9-year-old Chen.
"I just came here to
skate my best,"
Savary said. "I
didn't really care
about the results as
long as I had fun
and a good skate."
As skill would have
it, his "good skate"
was enough to earn
him his first
national medal, as
well as an
introduction to
two-time Olympic
medalist Nancy
Kerrigan, and an
on-air interview
with her.
"It's so cool
because I thought of
her as a legend
growing up, and I am
so happy to finally
meet her," he said.

What Has Fizz, Flash and Came to May B. Leasure
School? |
|
 |
It’s bubbling,
flowing, glowing and
exciting – it’s
chemistry! The
third, fourth, and
fifth grade students
at May B. Leasure
Elementary School
recently enjoyed
“What’s The Matter
Chemistry With Fizz,
Foam and Flash."
This program about
matter, molecules
and chemical
reactions was
presented by the
Maryland Science
Center’s Traveling
Science Team. The
show explored the
states of matter,
physical changes and
chemical reactions.
Students saw how
chemistry is
everywhere and
affects us
everyday. The
students were
thrilled to see
chemical reactions
that fizzed, foamed,
flashed, changed
colors, heated up,
cooled down, and
exploded! Student
volunteers assisted
the trained
professionals in
this hands-on,
interactive science
program which was
both fun and
educational.

Wilson 5th Graders Conduct Climate Research on
the Antarctic |
|
|
|
Wilson Elementary School has
been hosting a Climate Change Student Summit (C2S2) Inner
Circle. Wilson Elementary Enrichment Services Teacher and ANDRILL
Arise Educator Julia Dooley first got Wilson students interested
in her research on the Antarctic by visiting each of the 5th
grade classrooms, exciting them with tales of her
adventures in Antarctica last year. Students were given the
opportunity to volunteer their time to the project.
Participating students were then selected from the list by a
committee of teachers.
Wilson’s C2S2 Inner Circle is
conducting climate research using
ANDRILL (ANtarctic geological DRILLing) created classroom
activities and
Thermochrons supplied by NASA. Students are also
participating in weekly video teleconferences with scientists at
work in Antarctica and with
classrooms
around the globe.
“We hope to present findings
to an audience, but this is still in the early planning stages.
By joining the Inner Circle we are following ANDRILL educator
Shakira Petit to the coldest place on earth as she becomes part
of the Off-Shore New Harbor science expedition to Antarctica
from October-December, 2008. Her experiences will mirror my
experiences last year as part of ANDRILL’s Mackay Sea Valley
Seismic Survey team.”
ANDRILL is a multinational collaboration comprised of more than
200 scientists, students, and educators from five nations
(Germany, Italy, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United
States) to recover stratigraphic records from the Antarctic
margin. The chief objective is to drill back in time to recover
a history of paleoenvironmental changes that will guide our
understanding of how fast, how large, and how frequent were
glacial and interglacial changes in the Antarctic region.
Future scenarios of global warming require guidance and
constraint from past history that will reveal potential timing,
frequency and site of future changes.

Christiana High Cadets Visit
Delaware Air National Guard
Twenty-two cadets and
Sgt. Maj.
Gary
G. Arnold Jr. USMC Ret,
Naval Science
Instructor, recently
visited the Delaware Air
National Guard C-130
squadron for an orientation
flight. Once at the base,
located at New Castle County
airport, the cadets received
an in-brief from Major Calcasi, the units
operations officer. He
covered the days events,
rules and regulations for
riding in a military
aircraft and takeoff and
landing times. All cadets
were screened and were
required to go through a
metal detector prior to
boarding the aircraft. We
boarded the aircraft at
10:30 and wheels up were at
11:00. The flight took us
to the Philadelphia/Willow
Grove area then over to
Atlantic City. From
Atlantic City, they flew down
the Delaware coast south of
Dover, enjoying the scenery
of beaches and the Atlantic
ocean and then returned to
the New Castle County
airport.
During takeoff and landing
two cadets were allowed in
the cockpit with the flight
crew. Throughout the
flight, all of the cadets
were allowed to rotate
through the flight deck, put
on a headset and ask
questions of the pilot and
co-pilot.
