Christina School District Will Continue Limited Full-Day
Kindergarten in 2009-2010

The Christina School District will offer Full-Day Kindergarten in nine locations for the 2009-2010 school year. This continues the Full-Day Kindergarten program at its eight existing locations, and adds one more site, the new elementary school slated to open in August 2009 at Route 40 and Porter Road in Bear.

In Wilmington, Bancroft, Elbert-Palmer, Pulaski, and Stubbs elementary schools will offer unlimited Full-Day Kindergarten. Students who reside outside the feeder patterns of these schools must complete a
Choice application to attend. Wilmington Kindergarten students who register for the 2009-2010 school year will be assigned to Full-Day Kindergarten unless a Half-Day session is specified by the parent or guardian.

In the greater Newark area, five schools will offer limited Full-Day Kindergarten, based on available capacity. Each school will offer 44 seats of Full-Day Kindergarten. These schools are Downes, Maclary, West Park Place, Wilson, and the new elementary school on Porter Road.

All students who wish to attend Full-Day Kindergarten in one of these locations must complete a
Choice application, even if they reside in the school’s feeder pattern. If more than 44 applications at each school are received by the January 14 Choice deadline, the current lottery process will go into effect, which gives priority to students in the school’s feeder pattern. All remaining students will be assigned to Half-Day Kindergarten.

School Choice applications are now and the deadline for applying for Choice is January 14, 2009. Choice applications are available in all schools, at the Christina administrative offices, and online at the District website: www.christina.k12.de.us.

For more information, please call the Christina Choice Office at 552-2618.

Leasure Elementary 4th Graders Are
On Top of the Stock Market
Photo: Leasure Elementary 4th Graders Ar On Top of the Stock Market

A team of three fourth grade students from Leasure Elementary School have been among the top in the state in picking stocks for the Stock Market Game, and this has resulted in national press coverage by the Wall Street Journal. Leasure Elementary School and Talent Development teacher Timothy Werbrich were featured in a front-page article in the Wall Street Journal on October 30.  Leasure Elementary School has 32 teams participating in the Stock Market Game, but the 4 grade team of Navjot Kaur, Jennifer Delcampo, and Jamier Schaener were noted because they have done an outstanding job of picking high-yield stocks. The team’s biggest payoff has come from their “purchase” of Exxon Mobil stock, which surged recently and placed the team at the top of state rankings. That particular stock was chosen because Kaur’s father owns several gas stations. The amount of stock purchased was a happy accident.

"We meant to buy 300 shares, but I accidently added an extra zero, and we ended up buying 3,000 shares,” she said. This mistake worked in the team’s favor, generating top “profits” for the team.

Mr. Werbrich said that the team’s earnings had "rocketed up" mostly because the students bought the 3,000 shares of Exxon Mobil before a temporary climb in early October. The stock gave back some of its gains and in recent days, the team lost $38,000 before making back half that and then watching the stock fall again.  Mr. Werbrich has been giving his students pep talks. He told them that "as bad as they were feeling about hypothetical losses, real investors can lose their hair and get ulcers and get seriously sick."

The Stock Market Game  is a scholastic contest in which students from grades four through 12 get a hypothetical $100,000 to invest in stocks, bonds or mutual funds.  The game is run by the Foundation for Investor Education, and schools pay a small fee per team for a curriculum that includes access to a computer system that executes the simulated trades and ranks teams by states and age group. At the end, the teams in each state with the best returns take home bull-and-bear trophies, gift certificates or other prizes.

Kaur, Delcampo, and Schaener want to base their next stock pick on the upcoming holiday season.

“We want to sell some Exxon and buy some Wal-Mart stock, because the commercials now are talking about Christmas,” Kaur said.

On October 29, Kirk Middle School 7th grade students took part in a career exploratory event called "What's My Line?"  The "What's My Line?" career awareness program, sponsored by the Business, Industry, Education (BIE) Alliance, helps students explore different careers and let students know what is expected of them in the workplace.  As part of the program, volunteers from the business community visit the school as "Mystery Guests."  Students try to guess the "Mystery Guests" occupations by asking yes and no questions.

Twelve presenters visit each 7th grade classroom.  During that time, each classroom saw three different presenters, each one for 30 minutes.  The students stayed in their classrooms while the presenters rotated.

Special thanks to Kirk Middle School's 12 community partners that took part in this event:

Recent Drop-Out Prevention Summit Materials Now Available

According to the America’s Promise Alliance, every 26 seconds, one American high school student drops out of school. That adds up to more than 1.1 million students per year.  For those young people who don’t graduate from high school, their future prospects are dim. The Delaware Department of Education (DOE) has made the video, agenda and PowerPoint presentations from its recent America’s Promise Drop Out Prevention Summit available on the DOE website.  A direct link to the material is currently featured on the DOE homepage under spotlight:  http://www.doe.k12.de.us  The video segments feature young people and adults speaking candidly about the reasons they dropped out of school, and offer insight into the ways our schools and communities can effectively address this dilemma.

Christina Students Participate in Election Events

On Friday, October 31 a student delegation from the Christina School District attended the Delaware Mock Election Convention in Dover.  The delegation members included:
  • Kirk Middle School - Portia Tyson (teacher), Patrick Hudson (student teacher) and Matthias Ojo (student)
  • Christiana High School - Mark Mangual (teacher) and Kellan Turner (student)

Shue-Medill Middle School social studies teacher Bart Dryden was the District Coordinator for the Mock Election program, which involved students statewide.  According to Dryden, close to 5,000 Christina students (grades 4-12) voted in the program.  Also on October 31, Christiana High School social studies teacher Ruth Mayer took 24 Christiana students to the Joe Biden Homecoming Rally at Memorial Hall on the Green at the University of Delaware.

At Brader Elementary School, 20 fourth and fifth grade enrichment students worked for several weeks studying every aspect of the election and entered the Delaware Project from the University of Delaware "Predict the Electoral Votes Contest."  The individual students assessed several current polls and the election history of every state for the last three elections, and predicted how they believed each state's electoral votes would be cast in this election.  "They can hold a conversation with anyone about the issues of this election and the election process in our country," said enrichment teacher Diane D'Angelo.

Kirk Seventh Grader Will Attend Obama/Biden Inauguration

Brianna Holmes Phillips, a 7th grader at Kirk Middle School, has been invited to attend the Junior Presidential Youth Inaugural Conference exclusively as an alumna of the National Young Scholars Program.  On January 20, 2009 Brianna will be there to witness President-elect Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joseph Biden take their oaths of office.  In addition, Brianna will view the inaugural parade at the historic Marriot Wardman Park Hotel, as the President and Vice President, along with their families, proceed to the U.S. Capitol building.  In conclusion to her five days in Washington, DC, she will attend a Gala Inaugural Ball.

Held every four years in January following the presidential election, the Junior Presidential Youth Inaugural Conference (JrPYIC) provides inaugural scholars with a unique experience as they take part in and share firsthand in the excitement and ceremony of the inauguration of the President and Vice President of the United States.

Alumni of the Congressional Youth Leadership Council and National Young Scholars Program are exclusively invited to attend private Inaugural Conference events and activities such as roundtable discussions with national journalists, meetings with congressional staff, and
point/counter point debates with leading political experts, as well as special events with VIP's.  Inaugural Scholars also take part in the traditional ceremony of the inauguration itself, as they witness the official swearing-in of the President of the United States, and view the inaugural parade as the President, Vice President and their families make their way from the U.S. Capitol to the White House.

Glasgow Football Team Tackles Cancer

On Friday, October 10th the mighty Dragons Football team joined the fight against breast cancer. Inspired by a spirited group of coaches who have committed the team to being involved in community efforts, the team rallied to tackle breast cancer by donating a portion of their concession stand money to Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, wearing pink wristbands to bring attention to the cause, and providing information to fans so that everyone can walk out of the stadium with a raised awareness about breast cancer. Glasgow's band also participated by wearing pink ribbons on their uniforms and the cheerleaders work pink hair ribbons.

Glasgow's football program is committed to excellence in the classroom and in the community.  Team members volunteer in DelDOT's Adopt-A-Highway Program, cleaning Old Newark Road three times a year, volunteering at A. I. DuPont Children's Hospital, and playing a major volunteer role in Glasgow's annual Campus Beautification Day.
