School Feeder Patterns for 2009-2010 Now
Available
Parents may utilize a searchable database,
review feeder
pattern maps, and access a new Google™
Map feature |
|
|
With the opening of the District's new elementary school on Porter
Road in August 2009, adjustments will be made to several suburban
elementary school feeder
patterns beginning with the 2009-2010 school year. Middle and high
school feeder patterns will NOT change.
A student's street address determines the schools that he or she
will attend, unless the student has exercised
Choice. Every residential address has a School Feeder Pattern,
which assigns students to an
Elementary
(Kindergarten through Grade 5),
Middle (Grades 6-8) and
High School (Grades 9-12).
To use this database effectively, you must have a house number,
street name or development. You must select the correct year
from the drop-down menu on the database search page. The red arrow
below illustrates the selection you must make to search the
2009-2010 database.

Parents
interested in viewing 2009-2010 feeder pattern maps may access them
at the links below. On the Suburban Elementary School Map, the
word “Porter” designates the new elementary school on Porter Road,
which will open in August 2009.

First ParentLink Message Sent to All District
Families |
All households in the Christina School
District should have received a personal
message from Dr. Lillian Lowery on October
14th inviting them to the 2008 Parent
Conference. This custom phone message
was sent using the district's new ParentLink
program.
ParentLink is a parent communication system
designed specifically to meet the needs of
K-12 school districts. ParentLink enables
CSD to directly communicate by phone to
student homes about
school emergencies, reminders, events and
deadlines, as well as student information
such as attendance.
ParentLink retrieves
its call information from a daily upload of
the district's student information system,
eSchoolPlus. It is critically
important that parents keep contact
information up to date in the system.
Please remember to contact your child's
school if there are any changes in your
address, phone number, or other records.
Because ParentLink
is a system that is still unfamiliar to most
parents, we ask for your patience while it
is being fully implemented. If
Christina School District appears on your
caller ID, please answer. The system
requires a voice or answering machine to
activate the message. Please do not
call the number that appears on your caller
ID unless you have listened to the message
fully and have questions pertaining to the
message.
To learn more about
ParentLink, please visit their website:

Have you ever read a book and wanted to sit down

Newark High School's Book Club was chosen this
summer to do that online. Random House
Publishers selected the NHS group as one of

Morsels is a dark and vivid story, set in
two worlds and worrying at the border between
them.
Newark's Book Club was able to write up
questions for the author. These questions
and the author's responses will be used by the
publisher as part of the American release of
this new book. You can view the questions
and responses online at:

To celebrate the release of
its updated 53 volume

fact-filled book about
America. One winner per
state was chosen, and Newark
High School's librarian,
Donna Reed, was chosen as
the winner for
Delaware. Newark will soon
be receiving a 53 volume set
of state books valued at

Verizon Contributes $28,729.86 to Support
Delaware School for the Deaf |
|
 |
A dollar a month may not seem like much, but it can go a long way to
improving literacy skills in Delaware while also giving people the
opportunity to succeed. Thanks to the generosity of Verizon
customers who participated in the company’s “Check Into Literacy”
program, Verizon Delaware president, William R. Allan, presented a
$28,729.86 grant to the Delaware School for the Deaf (DSD) on
October 8 to upgrade its lending library program and integrate
advanced technology in its classrooms.
The Check Into Literacy initiative allows Verizon landline phone
customers to check a box on their monthly bills to make a $1 per
month, tax deductible donation. The program has raised more than
$50,000 through donations by Delaware customers since
2006.
“This is a classic case of a little bit going a long way to address
a significant challenge for our society,” said Allan. He
presented the check to Secondary School Leader Mindi Failing
Rittenhouse at Delaware School for the Deaf. Grants are given
to organizations and programs like DSD that have a statewide focus.
DSD serves deaf, hard-of-hearing, and deaf-blind students throughout
the state.
Part of the money ($6,458.86) will be used to support the Lending
Library Program, which provides resources to parents for developing
competency in American Sign Language (ASL) as well as storytelling
skills in sign language. Literacy skills are the foundation of
all learning and begin developing at an early age. More than
90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents who have not yet
developed the necessary skills to communicate in sign language with
their child. The lending library materials enable parents to
increase their skills while allowing their child to experience a
variety of books, with signed versions of stories available on
videotape.
The Integrating Advanced Technology in the Classroom portion of the
grant applies the remaining $43,899.00 toward the purchase of
document cameras, LCD projectors, and SMART boards in classrooms, in
order to enhance access to information in sign language and English.
The interactive SMART boards, which look like regular white boards
but have many features that allow for the visual presentation of
images and elements, as well as connections to the Internet, help
support the development of language and literacy lesson activities.
Shannon Taylor, a middle school teacher at DSD, remarked, “The SMART
boards allow me to be more creative. The kids can be more
independent in the classroom, and I act more like the facilitator.
The students love being able to be involved like that. I can
also get through the material much faster. The flow is more
natural in the classroom now.”
Elementary School Leader Debra Trapani agrees, stating, “The SMART
boards support both English and ASL. Students are able to see
in English what they’ve just seen in ASL and make those connections
immediately. Verizon has given us so much support for our
students. This technology really drives us forward, and we
appreciate it so much.”

Stubbs Elementary Teacher Gets a Surprise from
Office Max
 |
Stubbs Elementary Teacher
Kherunnissa Merchant was one
of 1,000 teachers nationwide
who were surprised at 10:00
a.m. on October 1 when four
employees of Office Max came
into her classroom to
present her with a huge box
full of office supplies and
equipment
worth more than
$1,000. The program, called
“A Day Made Better”
honors classroom teachers
for their hard work and
dedication by donating items
to enhance their classrooms.
Merchant received a leather
office chair, computer
printer, digital camera, and
desktop organizer, as well
as tape, paper, scissors,
markers, and many other
classroom supplies. Her
class also received a cake,
and a banner will be hung in
the teacher’s lounge.
Merchant was nominated by
Stubbs Elementary school
principal Dr. Mae Gaskins.
When asked why their teacher
was chosen, Dr. Gaskins
responded to students that
Ms. Merchant was not only a
great teacher, she also
demonstrated the qualities
of caring and commitment to
students. “She really cares
about you, and she cares
about the success of every
student in her class,” she
said. Merchant is a 4th
grade teacher at Stubbs.
Office Max chose Merchant to
be the recipient of the “A
Day Made Better” prizes
after receiving nominations
from schools throughout the
greater Newark area.
In addition, Office Max,
located a 106 Geoffrey
Drive, has officially
adopted Stubbs Elementary
for its Adopt-A-Classroom
donation program. This
program will allow members
of the community to make
donations to the school.
Donors may pick a classroom
at Stubbs, and all donations
to that classroom go
directly to the teacher, who
can obtain classroom
resources from Office Max to
enhance the learning
environment. There will also
be point of purchase
opportunities for customers
to make donations directly
to Stubbs Elementary School.
For more information about
the program, interested
individuals may visit the
