Gauger-Cobbs REACH Student Runs
Campaign for Student Council President

Dominick David, an eighth-grade student in the REACH program at Gauger-Cobbs Middle School, is running for student council president this year.  According to his teacher, Richard Gilpin, Dominick is passionate about people.  He frequently talks with other students both in the program and outside of the program.  Dominick saw posters and heard announcements aboutPhotograph: Dominick David the student government and talked about being involved.  After speaking with his mother and the student council coordinator, Stacy Heller, he was encouraged to join the campaign.  REACH (Realistic Educational Alternative for Children with Disabilities) is a program for students with developmental disabilities that serves Christina School District students aged
2-1/2 to 21.

Through Dominick’s campaign, he is helping the other students in the REACH class to learn about election campaigns, voting, and general issues which will be linked to the current presidential election.  He is also helping regular education students become more familiar with REACH students.  The REACH class worked with regular education student aides to come up with practical campaign issues relevant to Gauger students.  The students will help prepare a brief speech for Dominick to read to the school over the public announcement system along with the other students campaigning for the office.  Dominick is helping his class become more involved in the Gauger student community and through his campaign will have many opportunities to make a connection to real world events taking place outside of the school.  Even if he is not elected, Dominick will be a member of the student council executive board and will be involved with making decisions that impact Gauger students.

Christina Delivers:
Student Wellness and Health Will be a Team Effort

CHS Specialist Andrea Solge delivers the district's wellness policy along with some healthy snacks, to principal Eric Stephens of Brookside Elementary School

Andrea Solge, Food Services Specialist for the Christina School District, delivers the district's wellness policy, along with some healthy snacks, to Principal Eric Stephens of Brookside Elementary School. The district plans to implement the wellness policy in all schools in the 2008-09 school year.

"This year, we'll see the wellness policy move off the shelf and into the classrooms," said Solge.

"We want to stay true to the policy and reinforce healthy choices throughout the day," added Stephens.

In addition, wellness teams are forming in each of the district's 28 schools, comprised of school nurses and nutritionists, PE and classroom teachers, administrators and parents. The wellness teams will be looking at ways to create overall healthier school environments.  Nemours Health and Prevention Services' 5-2-1-Almost None program will play a part in those efforts.  Children and adultsLearn more about Nemours Campaing to Make Delaware's Kids the Healthiest in the Nation can better maintain their weight and health if they:

  • Eat at least five fruits and vegetables every day

  • Spend no more than two hours a day in front of TV, video and computer screens

  • Get at least one hour of physical activity every day

  • And, drink almost no sugary beverages, like sodas and sports drinks - just one or two a week is plenty.

New Preschool Playground at Brader Elementary
School is a True Community Effort

Photograph: Volunteers at Brader Elementary School

In the summer months, most high school athletes are enjoying some time off, but a group of athletes from Glasgow High school spent a few hours on July 23 helping install a playground for some of the District's youngest students.Photograph: Volunteers Assemble Playground Equipement

The Brader Elementary School PTA worked with teachers and administrators this past summer to coordinate the installation of a preschool playground on the school grounds.  The PTA generously donated the funds to purchase the equipment, and also enlisted the help of Brader parents to help with the delivery and installation.  For the athletes from Glasgow High School, this was a community service project and a way to help preschool children have their own place to play.  The new playground now provides a fun, secure area for students Photograph: Volunteer using sliding boardin the Wings for Learning preschool program to enjoy time outside.

The Wings for Learning preschool program at Brader Elementary School is an inclusive early childhood preschool and childcare program for children 3 to 5 years of age.  The program is taught by certified, highly qualified teachers, special educators, and paraprofessionals.  Children must be three years old by August 31 and must live in or attend a child care program in the Christina School District to be eligible to attend.  For more information, please contact Early Childhood Education Services at 552-2688.

Christiana students who attended the conference were: Oluwarotimi Akojie, Eric Carlucci, Lakief Christopher, Andrew Dalton, Anthony Dickerson, Ewan Douse, William Popplewell, and Travon Taylor.  Andrew Dalton and Eric Carlucci placed 9th in the Manufacturing Prototype competition, which included more than 100 entries. “All of the students competed very hard and I'm proud of each of them,” said TSA advisor Jeffery Epting.

High school and middle school technology students, guided by their chapter advisors, prepared all year to compete with their peers in technology events such as Agriculture and Biotechnology, CAD, Construction Challenge, Cyberspace Pursuit, Engineering Design, Flight Endurance, Medical Technology, Promotional Graphics, Robotics and Transportation Modeling. Attendees also participated in the DuPont Leadership Academy, designed to develop and enhance leadership skills through customized sessions for middle and high school students and teachers, graduating seniors and chapter and state TSA officers.

Glasgow Band Performs During Memorial Dedication
Honoring Delaware's Unknown Soldiers

Photograph: Glasgow High School Band under the direction of Michael Rogalski

On Friday, September 5, 2008 the GHS Band performed at the Cooch's Bridge Battlefield Memorial Service.  The service was held to honor Delaware's unknown soldiers, 231 years after dying for liberty and independence.  The Pencader Heritage Area Association hosted a 6:00 p.m. ceremony to dedicate a monument honoring those killed September 3, 1777, in the Battle of Cooch's Bridge, the lonePhotograph: Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 474 Revolutionary War battle fought on Delaware soil.

The monument is at the heritage display located at Old Baltimore Pike and Dayett Mills Road.  At the dedication, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 474 in Newark, which donated flagpoles for the site, provided a honor guard with Korean War veteran George R. Taylor playing taps.  The guard fired memorial volleys with members of the 6th Maryland Volunteers.  The event - with speakers, Delaware National Guard, 1st Delaware Regiment, Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution - debuted "The Battle of Cooch's Bridge," music composed by Glasgow High band instructor Michael Rogalski and performed by the GHS band.

Child Nutrition Services Shows Its Flair
CNS Participates in "The Farmer and the Chef" at the Chase Center

The Child Nutrition Services of the Christina School District (CNS) showed its culinary prowess and competed with upscale Wilmington restaurants at “The Farmer and the Chef” competition this year on September 18, 2008 at the Riverfront Chase Center.  Serving dishes like Pulled Pork over a Jicama Salad and Chef Paul Schuele’s own Bouillabaisse, a seafood dish with a zesty tomato broth, Chef Marc-Anthony Williams and his team proved to attendees at theLearn more about The Farmer & The Chef Chase Center that the children of the Christina School District are served food as sophisticated as they could find in some of the area’s toniest eateries. Chef Fran, who serves all city schools, served Caribbean jerked chicken with golden mashed cauliflower, which was well-received by the crowd of over 500.  Attendees included US Senator Tom Carper, Lieutenant Governor John Carney and New Castle County Superintendent Chris Coons.

“The Farmer and the Chef” is an outgrowth of New Castle County Superintendent Chris Coons’ “Buy from Your Neighbor” program that encourages partnerships between local agricultural businesses and restaurants.  CNS has adopted this philosophy with its own “Farm Fresh Project” that encourages local farmers to supply CNS with produce that they can use in the schools’ kitchens.  So far, results have been mixed, with few farms participating in the program.  Chef Williams vows to keep trying.  “We’ll reach out to local farmers and remind them of the volume business that we can generate.  We serve more than 15,000 meals per day. Someone with vision will step forward eventually.”  CNS enjoyed a relationship with Shangri-Llama Farms, but its recent sale has ended their working relationship.

No funds from the Christina School District were used for CNS’ participation in “The Farmer and the Chef” and much of the food was donated by PK Foods of Wilmington, DE.

Christina Board Approves Preliminary Budget

The Christina Board of Education approved the District’s preliminary budget for Fiscal Year 2009 at its regular meeting on September 23. The State of Delaware requires school districts to provide a final budget by December 31 of each year.  The Christina School District School Board and District Leadership require the preparation and adherence to a preliminary budgetGraphic: Calculator for appropriate fiscal management.

Christina’s Preliminary and Final Budgets are unique because the District is made up of five separate agencies. In addition to the general operating budget for the District’s regular schools, Christina must prepare budgets for the four additional schools and programs it oversees. These include the Delaware School for the Deaf, the Delaware Autism Program, the ILC program, and the R.E.A.C.H. program.

The FY09 preliminary budget includes a loan payment to the state in the amount of $3 million. This is an increase over last year’s loan payment of $1.5 million.

The preliminary budget reflects balanced budgets for all agencies. Budgets for the Delaware School for the Deaf, Delaware Autism Program, ILC, and R.E.A.C.H are all planned increases over last year spending levels.  Actual expenses for these special agencies are driven by students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and not budgetary considerations.  The district is required to provide the financial support to fund levels of service determined by student IEPs.

A final budget will be brought to the Christina Board of Education for approval at the December meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, December 9 at Stubbs Elementary School.
