Dr. Marcia V. Lyles Details Superintendent's Entry Plan:
Listen, Learn, and Lead

Christina School District Superintendent, Dr. Marcia V. LylesExpecting Excellence for Everyone
Christina Superintendent Dr. Marcia V. Lyles has created a Superintendent's Entry Plan which details her objectives for the first 120 days of her leadership.  The plan focuses on the theme “Expect Excellence,” and provides steps for increasing collaboration and communication among all areas of the organization. The plan stresses that strategy, operations, and partnership are critical for the District’s future success, and that it will be necessary for District staff and the Board of Education to chart an aggressive, accelerated agenda for excellence.

The timeline for implementation of the plan includes:
  • Meetings with parents, elected officials,
    community and business leaders,
    July 6-September 30
  • Individual meetings with union leaders, District
administrators, and principals, July 6-August 6
  • Executive leadership retreat, August 4
  • School visits when schools reopen,
    August 15-October 15
  • Board of Education retreat (held locally),
    September 5
  • Employee Listening Sessions, September 8 & 9
  • Instructional audit, September 14-15
  • Meetings with elementary, middle and high
    school principal groups, September 14-30
  • Teacher focus groups, September 14-30
  • Town Hall meetings, September 30 and October 1
  • Goals and objectives submitted:  October 15

Included in the plan are the following key points:

  • We must be driven by collaboration
Principals, teachers, school staff and parents must all work together to achieve success for all students. All members of our community play critical roles in student excellence.

  • We must listen, and also lead
In order to be successful, we must listen attentively, learn quickly, and lead boldly. Dr. Lyles continues to meet with district principals and many key community leaders since beginning in her role as superintendent on July 1, in order to learn as much as possible about what’s working and what needs to be improved.

  • We must make decisions in the best interest of students
We must celebrate our successes, but we must also challenge our assumptions and chart a new, accelerated agenda for excellence. We must continue to review current strategies we have in place and use data to determine whether those strategies are working. We must take a strong look at our current programs, practices, and policies with an eye to improving and strengthening our organization on behalf of students.

  • We must support our employees, and invest in our teachers
We must continue to support dedicated, high-performing school leaders, and develop and nurture teachers to achieve their professional best. Dr. Lyles has communicated to all members of the District’s leadership staff her commitment to ongoing professional development.

  • We must engage and mobilize our Board, our parents, and
    the community
We must invite our elected leadership and all members of the community
to get engaged in our success. We must all see our important roles in supporting excellence every day, for every child, in every class. This
goal will be carried out in a variety of ways—including town hall meetings, back-to-school campaigns, parent and community surveys, and continued public outreach.

An overview of the plan appears below, and the Superintendent's Entry Plan shared with the Board of Education is available at the following link:  www.christina.k12.de.us/Superintendent/2009/07_EntryPlan.pdf
