Alternative Education Services

Alternative placements are intended to be short term educational placements for students who violate the Christina Code of Conduct and for those students who are returning from placement in an Outside Agency. Students in classroom Students must attend an alternative placement program for one complete marking period to be considered for return to the comprehensive school.  Students who are expelled with services from the Christina School District are assigned to an alternative educational program for the term of their expulsion,
and must apply to the CSD Board of Education for
re-admission before returning to the comprehensive school.

All students who are alternatively placed must successfully meet the goals and expectations discussed at the onset of the placement, including specific goals related to attendance, behavior, attitude, participation in counseling, and academic performance.  If a student meets the criteria for return to the comprehensive school, representatives from both schools, the student, and his or her parent/guardian are required to meet to plan a smooth transition.

Alternative Placement Options
The Christina School District includes the Douglass School serving students in grades K-12.  Its mission is to provide personalized opportunities for academic and social growth through flexible programming that is responsive to a students' abilities and learning needs.

The Douglass Alternative Distance Education Program is a unique education program available to high school students who are precluded from attending their comprehensive high school.  It enables students to access and complete core curriculum courses required for high school graduation.  This web based program utilizes instructional technology to promote accelerated mastery of concepts and credit retrieval.  Learning is accelerated by individualized computer assisted instruction.  Students may access the online program through any high speed internet connection.

The District has two other placement options available for students in grades 4-12.  Parkway Academy (grades 4-12) provides an alternative education program, with a strong counseling component and bi-monthly individual reviews of each student.  Kingswood Academy (grades 9-12) is intended for severely disruptive students, and uses a non-traditional approach that focuses on the whole youth, including the family and community.

Questions about alternative education services may be directed to the Manager of School Climate and Discipline.  Calls may be directed to 302-552-2771.
